Classification and importance of safety capacitors

In the design and manufacturing of electronic products, safety capacitors play a vital role. Safety capacitors are mainly divided into two categories: X capacitors and Y capacitors. Both X capacitors and Y capacitors are safety capacitors designed to ensure that personal safety will not be endangered if the product fails. Specifically, the capacitor connected between the live wire and the neutral wire is called the X capacitor, and the capacitor connected between the live wire and the ground wire is the Y capacitor. Both types of capacitors are widely used in power supply filters to provide filtering for common-mode and differential-mode interference respectively.
The safety rating of safety capacitors is based on the peak pulse voltage and overvoltage levels they can withstand. For example, X capacitors are divided into X1, X2 and X3 grades according to the International Electrotechnical Commission IEC664 standard. These grades represent different voltage levels that the capacitor can withstand. Similarly, Y capacitors are also divided into different grades, such as Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4. These grades are distinguished based on the insulation type and rated voltage range. In addition, the capacitance of the Y capacitor is usually limited to control the leakage current under rated frequency and rated voltage and the impact on the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of the system.
In terms of use environment, Y capacitors must not only comply with the corresponding grid voltage withstand requirements, but also have sufficient safety margins in electrical and mechanical performance to avoid breakdown or short circuit under extremely harsh environmental conditions. For example, GJB151 stipulates that the capacity of the Y capacitor should not be greater than 0.1uF. The voltage resistance performance of Y capacitor is of great significance for protecting personal safety.

The wide application of safety capacitors in various electronic products makes them closely related to our daily lives. The product quality of safety capacitors is directly related to our quality of life and safety. Therefore, when choosing safety capacitors, you should give priority to genuine products from the original factory and ensure that they have safety certifications from various countries to ensure quality and safety of use. To sum up, safety capacitors not only play a key role in electronic products, but are also crucial to ensuring consumer safety and improving product reliability.
